H. Dorothy Benedict has been a breakthrough breeder from Herb Benedict. It was registered in 1983 and for years was unavailable on the open hosta market, although it was sold at AHS auctions and passed along to friends. When it came on the market in 1998, it sold for between $200 and $300. It appeared as one streaked seedling amid thousands of ‘Frances Williams’ seedlings (all selfed FWs). The plant is 14″ x 9″ and the leaves are blue-green with gold stripes between the veins and some gold mottling. The leaves are cupped, cordate, and slightly rugose. The margins are smooth. The flowers are nearly white with purple markings. It often has variegated leafy bracts. It is fertile. It grows slowly and is still a very desirable breeder.
